SUMMARY:Impact of Substance Use-Training
DESCRIPTION:Click here to RSVP: Impact Substance Use-Training\n\nDescrip
tion:\n\n\n\n\n\nChildren in the child welfare system or those who have
been adopted may have been exposed to drugs and alcohol before birth. Th
ese exposures can significantly impact a child's development in utero an
d beyond. Research indicates that alcohol exposure has the most severe l
ong-term consequences\, often resulting in permanent brain injury and fe
tal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Other substance exposures can al
so affect a child’s development and behavior.\n\nOne key concept for f
oster and adoptive parents to understand is that FASD is a permanent bra
in injury. Children with FASD may appear willfully disobedient or "naugh
ty\," but these behaviors are often symptoms of a brain injury manifesti
ng in behavioral ways. By reframing these behaviors through the lens of
a brain injury\, parents can foster greater patience and empathy\, even
during challenging times.\n\nThis training will also address other prena
tal substance exposures and their effects on child development.\n\n&nbsp
\;\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nGoals of This Session:\n\n Gain an
understanding of FASD and the potential lifelong impacts on children’s
social\, emotional\, and cognitive functioning associated with FASD and
other parental substance use conditions.\n Understand the impact of su
bstance use on the developing brain\, both in utero and throughout the c
hild’s lifetime.\n Identify effective parenting strategies for childr
en who have been exposed to substances prenatally.\n Develop an underst
anding of the genetic components of addiction and recognize addiction as
  a chronic disease.
